Our Next OIMY Session

Our next OIMY session is coming up pretty fast, it will be Thursday, November 13th and Friday, November 14th on Saturna. We expect that the travel times will be the same as our last SEEC adventure. What will be different this time is that all OIMY students will receive Exploratory selections next week, so we can all sign up for our preferred activity, whether that is cooking, art and nature, geocashing, etc.

An updated schedule of events will be posted here next week as well!

OIMY @ SEEC for Term 1 of 2014

For Term 1, OIMY is teaming up with SEEC! SEEC is the Saturna Ecological Education Centre, a unique program in our district. Last year OIMY students travelled to Saturna to get a taste of what SEEC offers; this year we'll get a much more comprehensive experience.

OIMY students will travel to Saturna Island, where the SEEC high school students will pair up with our OIMY students to explore and experience ecological learning. The OIMY students will work through a process of developing leadership skills that can be applied to leading ecological learning activities on their home-islands. This year's program will consists of two back-to-back days with an overnight camping experience. Such a format will create the opportunity for rich place-based learning, integrating academic competencies, explorations, physical education, and significant social opportunities. The first session of this year's OIMY program will take place on Wednesday and Thursday, October 15 and 16, 2014. Here is a link to an outline of activities and the "what to bring list".

Our last session on Galiano is next week (June 4th). Deblekha has arranged the day to be a working morning, then an afternoon of celebrating our students' hard work, creativity and expression, and making connections.

Here is a sneak peak of some of the creations:

Some thoughts/quotes/poetry from our academic session:

"Me" Poem
< I am ambitious and enthusiastic >
< I am friendly and kind >
< I am helpful and I am a leader >
< I am me! >

On the topic of digital citizenship (the opportunities we have to use our values to change digital culture):
A Call for Change
"In the new and advancing world we have many opportunities to do amazing things, yet we squander them for the fear of looking "uncool". We also have access to almost limitless amounts of information, yet we use it to taunt each other and do other useless things."

Our themes from May 7th

Every student was asked for a word or phrase that was most important to them from our academic exploration of the importance of hearing everyone's voice (groups in society, in our communities, and finding our own voice). The words and phrases were entered into a "wordle" which makes the words or phrases that occur repeatedly or most often larger. This was our result!

Our first of four sessions partnered with HumanEYES on Galiano begins tomorrow!

HumanEYES is a program organized through "Access to Media". Led by Deblehka Guin, founder of Access to Media and a parent in our Galiano community, this year's program will continue to explore our academic theme of peace by focusing on this idea: "me to we - exploring our 'piece' of the peace puzzle". Our four sessions will include writing, interviewing and poetry (focus on literary devices and creative writing); group work (focus on cooperation and communication); and digital citizenship (how our individual values can change online culture). Our last session is a celebration and presentation of our projects.  For more information on our program for Term 3 check out this page: oimyprogram.blogspot.ca/p/humaneyes.html
