HumanEYES

Human EYES 2014

HumanEYES is a program organized through "Access to Media". Led by Deblehka Guin, founder of Access to Media and a parent in our Galiano community, this year's program will continue to explore our academic theme of peace by focusing on this idea: "me to we - exploring our 'piece' of the Peace Puzzle". Our four sessions will include writing, interviewing and poetry (focus on literary devices and creative writing); group work (focus on cooperation and communication); and digital citizenship (how our individual values can change online culture). Our last session is a celebration and presentation of our projects.

These activities will be complimented with art based exploratories:

Fabric Art with artist Patti Moreland: Create your own fabric arts personas using a variety of objects and materials. You will have a chance to make a persona based on how you see yourself or you think others see you.

Drawing with artist Jimena De Miguel: In this session we’ll explore the relationship between the use of line in drawing and the use of lines in peace making.  Starting with, but not limited to, the Peace Lines in Northern Ireland, and drawings in the 21st Century. Some of the artists we will look at are, Avish Khebrehzadeh, Ilene Sunshine, Michael Snow, and Paul Klee.

Clay with artist Laurie MacCallum: We will sculpt several clay items using hand building techniques such as pinchpot, slab and/or coils.  Students will learn different surface applications for decorating their work.

Mask-making with artist Siobhan Tarry: Students will conceptualize, form and create a mask using plaster of Paris.  The process is such that deep empathy and understanding of others is experienced and enhanced. Students may then decorate their masks with abandon or restraint, using a wide variety of materials, outlandish or conservative: paint, feathers, fabric, found objects, shells and natural materials, technological cast-offs.

Mixed Media with artist Roksan Kohen: In this session you will use different materials--from paint and wire to threads,  found objects and wood--to create a unique ‘piece for peace’ that illustrates how diverse people and elements can live together.

HumanEYES 2013

Last year was our first experience with HumanEYES in the OIMY program. Students engaged with artists and local experts to address social justice issues in discussion, problem solving, drama, presentations, and creative works.

It was a great last term of our first year! Below is a slideshow of images that document the process and the products created!
